Bella Rose has a gift. She sees colors and shapes and remembers images. The talent puts her into puzzle competitions.
 
But she is poor, and with a neglectful mother, her talent is abused. Mom's boyfriend forces Bella to compete in a higher age bracket where the prize money will be higher. Bella befriends a homeless man and wants to live with a family friend.
 
The story begins with Bella at fifteen-years-old retelling her life to a therapist so she can be removed from the only home she knows and start a new life with Alice. But tragedy strikes and Bella is forced into a life she doesn't want.
